What is the Web?

The World Wide Web is a system of Internet servers that support specially formatted documents (HTML).

... but it is not the same thing as the Internet.

Ok, so what is the Internet?

The web (HTML), but also

email, video, file sharing, games...

It is millions of computers worldwide, connected together to share information

ARPANET - 1960s

Written about in 1961, created by US Department of defense in 1969

Internet - 1970s

email invented, Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn design TCP,
1976: Queen Elizabeth II sends her first email

Internet - 1980s

DNS (.com, .net, .edu) system created

World Wide Web - 1990s

HTTP/HTML - the world wide web - created by Tim Berners-Lee

The first website info.cern.ch was published in 1991 by Tim Berners-Lee
